Michael Larkin was the son of Annie Casey
and Peter Larkin and the grandson of Margaret Tinneny of Belturbet, Co.
Cavan, Ireland and Michael Casey. He
was born in Granard, County Longford on October 4, 1914.
He was professed in the Carmalite order of
Catholic priests on August 4, 1935 and at that time his name was changed
from Michael to Thomas Aquinas Larkin.
He was ordained a priest at Esker, near Athenry, county Galway on
September 21, 1941 and said his first Mass the next day September 22, in
Belturbet, county Cavan.
His first assignment was to Saint
Patrick's College, Maynooth, where he graduated with a Licentiate in
theology (STL) in June 1945. From
then until June 1969 he held the Chair of Dogmatic Theology at the
Carmalite House of Studies (Saint Mary's, Morehampton Road also known as
Gayfield) where he taught dogmatic theology.
He served as Prior of the Carmalite house at Gayfield from 1948
to 1954 and as student master there from 1963 to 1969.
At the Order’s Chapter meeting of 1969, Michael was made Prior
of Saint Theresa's, Clarendon Street in Dublin for the next 3 years.
He remained there until about a year and a half before he died
when he was sent to Our Lady's Manor, Dalkly, county Dublin for special
nursing care after surgery. He
died there on November 18th 1993.
