Richard is the grandson of Margaret Tinneny of Philadelphia and Edward McKenna. He was born in Philadelphia in 1937 and entered the Marist religious order as a brother in the late 1950s. He served as a teacher and in various administrative positions. As of 2002 he was the pastorial assistant at Holy Family Catholic Church in Richwood West Virginia.
