John is the great grandson of Yankee Pat Tinneny of Goladuff, County Fermanagh, Ireland and the son of John P. McColgan and Marie Becht of Philadelphia. He and Joanne were married at Saint Columba's Catholic Church in Philadelphia June 11, 1960.
