Elizabeth Tinneny was
born on 13 March 1903. She was the sixth child and second daughter of
James Tinneny and Mary Ann McEntyre. Lizzie was baptized in Saint
Mary's Church in Newtownbutler. Her godparents were Patrick and
Margaret Tinneny.
Lizzie never married
and lived on Goladuff most of her life. She lived and worked for a time
as a domestic in and around Galway in western Ireland. She was a good
housekeeper and was remembered by her niece Mary McGuinness McGarvey as
quite a good cook. When she lived with her mother and brothers on
Goladuff, in addition to doing the household chores, Lizzie also feed
and milked the cows.
Lizzie was described
as being a strong, robust red-faced woman who was plagued by mental
illness all of her life. Some family members recounted to me that they
remembered hearing Lizzie’s cries on the Quivvy side of the lough. At
times, deeply depressed, Lizzie roamed wailing along the bottom at
Goladuff. She was in and out of the hospital at Omagh for treatment
throughout her life. Finally in the early 1950s her aged mother and her
brothers were unable to care for her properly and she was committed
permanently at the hospital at Omagh.
About 1959 Lizzie was
found to have a brain tumor. She was operated on and the tumor was
successfully removed. Although the tumor may have been the source of
her mental problems, by this time there was no one at Goladuff to take
care of her and she remained at Omagh where she worked in the kitchen.
About 1964 Lizzie died
of a stroke at the hospital in Omagh, County Fermanagh. She was buried
in the Tinneny plot at Drummully Cemetery.
